saratonia

If you have a friend called Saratonia, you're a lucky one. She may seem spoiled, but deep down, she has the sweetest soul. She may not be the best person to vent to, but if you are straightforward advice, you can go to her. Her parents might be one of the richest people in the city.

Starvation Rationalization

The micro-level, moralistic cousin to famine rationalization. It personalizes hunger, suggesting an individual's starvation results from a lack of hustle, poor planning, or divine will, rather than from dispossession, engineered scarcity, or the violence of markets. It turns a social condition into a personal failing.
Example: "They're hungry because they don't budget properly or value education." This starvation rationalization ignores the reality of food deserts, unlivable wages, and the time poverty of working three jobs. It rationalizes a society's failure to feed its people by blaming the empty stomachs themselves.

The rhetorical move of pretending that capitalism, imperialism, and colonialism are separate phenomena with no meaningful connection, despite overwhelming historical evidence that they evolved together, supported each other, and continue to intertwine. This fallacy argues that sure, colonialism was bad, but that's over now, and capitalism is a different thing, and imperialism is something other countries do. It's like separating a cake into "flour," "sugar," and "eggs" after it's been baked and insisting they were never really connected. Separation by rupture allows people to enjoy the benefits of systems built on exploitation while claiming moral distance from the exploitation itself.
Separation by Rupture Fallacy Example: "The historian explained how British colonialism enabled the Industrial Revolution through resource extraction and forced markets. The commenter responded with separation by rupture: 'Colonialism was bad, but capitalism is just free markets! They're totally different!' The historian sighed, pointed at the cotton in their shirt, the tea in their cup, and the rubber in their shoes—all products of that 'rupture'—and wondered if history class had been canceled."

Starvation Wages

Compensation set so low that it systematically fails to meet the basic requirements for human survival, despite full-time employment. Starvation wages are not accidents of the market but deliberate features of late-stage capitalism—calculated precisely to keep workers alive enough to work but desperate enough to accept any condition. They represent the point where the wage form itself becomes a mechanism of slow violence: you work, you earn, you still cannot afford food, housing, healthcare, or rest. The term deliberately evokes its literal meaning: wages that produce starvation, whether immediate (literal hunger) or structural (the starvation of possibility, of dignity, of future). Starvation wages are the economic foundation upon which hyperslavery is built.
Example: "He worked forty hours, took home checks that didn't cover rent, ate once a day, and was told to budget better. He wasn't underpaid; he was paid Starvation Wages—compensation calculated to keep him alive but never free."

Starvation Jobs

Employment positions designed or structured such that they cannot provide a viable livelihood, regardless of hours worked or effort expended. Starvation jobs are the logical complement to starvation wages—positions that exist not to support workers but to extract maximum value while returning minimum sustenance. They include gig economy "opportunities" that pay below minimum wage after expenses, retail positions with intentionally limited hours to avoid benefits, contract work with no guaranteed income, and any job where full-time employment still means poverty. Starvation jobs are the primary occupation of the hyperslave class—work that takes everything and returns nothing but the chance to keep working.
Example: "He had three Starvation Jobs—delivering food, driving for a rideshare, and overnight stock—and still couldn't afford an apartment. Not unemployment, but its opposite: employment so total and so insufficient that it became its own kind of poverty."
