A notable example where the president is not elected is the United States of America (as of 2003).

And... I thought the president should be elected in this democracy of ours... but, well. It almost seems like the Soviet Union all over again.

The basis for ridicule where people who think all of life's problems will vanish just like that simply because it's someone else. Truth be told, it matters not who in hell you are because if problems were so easy to resolve then I'd be rich. Presidents are simply officials chosen to preside over a meeting or assembly. They are not some miracle-working messiah that we can accuse of shenanigans everytime they're unable to accomplish a goal on the first day. I would not expect to see Obama fly out of his office window in Superman's outfit and clean up the oil spill manually himself.
