Identifying plates fitted to vehicles in the UK (and elsewhere), carrying the vehicle's registration number.
Similar to License plate, Registration plate etc.

In the UK the reg. no. belongs to the vehicle, not the driver, and contains information about the age of the vehicle and the region in which it was first sold. The system is administered by the DVLA.

The reg. number is alphanumeric, and takes the form AB12 CDE on vehicles registered after 2001, or A123 BCD on vehicles registered before 2001.

Some scouse git has stolen my number plates. Now I will be done by the police.

A now-defunct revolutionary Japanese indie rock band. They formed in 1995 and disbanded quickly in 2002. They released 4 studio albums: School Girl Bye Bye, School Girl Distortional Addict, Sappukei, and Num-Heavymetallic. They are better than you.

They consist of Mukai, Tabuchi, Nakao, and Inazawa. The song "Omoide In My Head" was played at every one of their shows. It always melted face.

"We're the only ones that have heard of Number Girl in this country, but they rock so hard!"

number is up

Someone's number is up the moment before they die. When used in the past tense, it means they were destined to die at the very time they actually did die. When used in the present tense, it might be a threat to kill someone immediately.

The phrase is perhaps based on the Take-a-Number System, in which customers take a numbered ticket rather than waiting in line. When the clerk calls out your number, "your number is up", and it is your turn to place your order with the clerk. Of course, the clerk might be the grim reaper instead!

A tree fell and killed him because his number was up. OR: You've pissed me off too many times, Humberto; your number is up.
