A non-inviting way to refer to a ‘skin-walker’ - a being that transforms into animals - typically coyotes, and sometimes people, in an attempt to kill humans. The legend comes from Navajo culture and is associated with death and bad omens. They roam the Appalachian area.

Beware of flesh steppers when entering the forest, you don’t want one stalking you.
