An acronym for, "Joking On State Time"
Orgins in South Louisiana Parish jails and prisons. Most specifically Southwest louisana.
As stated it mainly means any length of time 6 months or more spent incarcerated. But has several variashons including;
Reference to any time someone is having fun or enjoyment in jail.
Jostmode is when you come to grips with the fact you are not getting out quickly and accept living inside to make the most of it.
Josting bad would be playing off someone's top, basically driving a fellow inmate in one of many particular stress factors and insecurities that are unique and specifically found only in incarceration. Like being self conscious or fearing the worst case scenario.
Jost with someone would be when a person in the free world is supporting a person locked up ie putting money on their books, money on the phone, letters, visits, phone calls, and leg work to get them out, calling lawyers, public defenders, judges etc. And also aiding in contraband into the facility. Ie if you're people make trustee status you drop them a package to be found while working in areas they have been entrusted to go to work outside the jail walls.
