The term is inspired by the (inaccurate) reputation of lemmings participating in mass migrations, which is used metaphorically to emphasize groupthink and the dangers of extreme ideologies.

The LEM's gathered at the rally, voicing their support for their controversial leader without questioning his motives or policies.
