geek

It doesn't seem to refer to 'computer programmers' as much as it once did when computers weren't so damn cool handy. Geeks are pretty much people who have a real understanding for a certain topic eg Films, music, cars. It's usualy that they are totaly obsessed about the topic, or it's just something they think alot on.

geek

A person involved in methods of escapism involving in general computers, sci-fi, anime etc. More often intelligent but not a pre-requsite to been a geek. Often disparaged or shuned by other groups of society when with others of their own kind entirely comfortable and isolate themselves from others, inclined to not be outgoing. Has the same chance as everbody else in future life, often believe that due to Bill Gates and society's reliance on computers that they themselves will be successful, but need character in order to do so. Could be head of multi-million worth firm, could also be stuck in a dead end job in the same rut they were at at school
Bill Gates was most likely a geek at school, but worked in a shed creating microsoft and had the drive and character to drive it through into the corporate giant it is today. Similarly today a person can remain a geek all their life going no where, working in a dead end job with little or moderate pay with no relationship.

geek

The modern interpretation of geek is someone who has a strong interest and enthusiasm towards a particular generalized subject, or a specific segment of that subject. There is no restriction on the types of subject that would qualify someone as being a geek on that subject. The interest may be strictly observational, but could also be participatory.

A "nerd" is sometimes used interchangeably with "geek". But more accurately, a nerd is a type of geek (commonly, but not entirely, restricted to interests involving academics or fantasy) who has difficulty communicating coherently with others outside the realm of their own interest.
The subject of a geek's interest can be absolutely anything, such as cars, video games, live theater, movies, music, technology, etc. Or the interest could be focused on a specific segment, such as a type of car, a style of theater, a genre of movies, a style of music, an area of technology, etc.

A music geek's participation, for example, may be limited to just watching musical performances, or actively playing an instrument.

The largest, and most vocal, collection of people who have a strong interest and enthusiasm towards a particular subject would be sports geeks.
