A word that I originally thought meant "potatoes" in Hindi. Then some old indian lady told me that batakas didn't mean anything at all, so I just started saying it as an indian sound effect, and "batakas" quickly became popular among white people in Wichita, KS.

In Puerto Rico, it is pronounced with silent D's, and is expression describing a person who is running into a bit of bad luck. Literally, it means, "salty cod fish."
