Bait is when one is trying to get a certain (generally negative) reaction out of someone or a group of people by stating something that would be taboo or otherwise negatively received by them

Josh baited the Pro Smash Bros. Players by saying they all like Steve with a pickaxe cause he's a miner (minor).

Typically a fishing term

used when waiting for action and you realize that you lost your bait and no such action will occur

Can also describe a missed opportunity or lost chance

He waited for her call or any sign to show that she still cared. After a few months he realized that he lost the bait.
