hamster

A small rodent not to be confused with a mouse. They are very fuzzy and friendly. They also like to dance. Also, they will run in little plastic or metal wheels until they die from either heart attack or exhaustion. Make good pets except they are known to plan world domination, escape artists and also like to run around your house and poop everywhere.

Hipster

A label used by the public to describe individuals who's cultural preferences are rooted in independent media rather than mainstream society. With the glorification of superficiality in Western culture post - 9/11 (celebrities, lifestyles, manufactured pop music etc.) any media which deviates from this and fosters an intellectual ethos is derided as 'pretentious' by current generations, who have subsequently become accustomed to the holocaust of mediocrity now permeating popular culture. Modern hipsters are mostly individuals who came of age during the 90's, and (having their beloved culture usurped by the information age and it's subsequent technology) find a defiant comfort in aspects of culture which reflect a kitsch/amateur/thrift store aesthetic representative of the times they grew up in. Because of this, they sometimes hold opinions which seem obnoxious to those who can't relate to having been a part of it. This is not usually intentional however, and mostly represents their anger at how the society they grew up in (which in an unusual move for society put substance and authenticity first) has been replaced by one which instead celebrates superficial values. Of course, those unfamiliar with this tend to interpret the hipster phenomenon as a fabricated trend (or cheap substitute for previous subcultures), and proceed to mock them for not sharing their vapid love of the Kardashians, Geordie Shore and the rest of their mainstream ilk. Hence, the hipster label was born.

(the unpoken rule of being a hipster is to not admit to being one, but I've broken it for this example)

Average Joe: Are you a hipster?

Hipster: Depends, can you appreciate the fact that I prefer stuff with substance? you know, stuff I can personally connect to? because god knows I can't connect to what others like, and they've made their feelings about this very apparent. That's their whole game; if you don't like what they do, you're the freak, the weirdo, the mental person. Rejection forces people to find somewhere they will be accepted. For me, its in the music and movies which say 'don't worry, we're not like them either'. It's the only thing that keeps me sane. Can you understand that?

Average Joe: *Derisive expression*

Hipster: Well that explains it all doesn't it? We try to be accepted, and get ridiculed for it. We try to be independent, and get ridiculed for it. Brilliant :/

Hipster Aesthetic

noun - 1. a member of the contemporary counterculture who suffers through mediocrity for the sake of cool.

2. a secular monk serving the gods of consumerism, worshiping american idolatry
3. one who assumes a vow of ironic poverty

The LCD Soundsystem concert was visually enticing, but Simon caught many an eye for exhibiting the crowd's cultural ideal, for Simon was a hipster aesthetic.

wannabe hipster

An individual that tries really hard to be a hipster. Some succeed and become a real or true hipster and some... not so much. These are the individuals in the hipster culture that are "too cool" to do stuff or have the "too good for you" mentality. They are often the trend followers in the hipster culture but still is considered a trend starter by many, especially in the non-hipster society(real world).

friend: lets go to this bar
wannabe hipster: thats lame, we're better than that (deep inside he really wants to go but is too worried that others might see him)
friend: but Bridgette(well known underground singer) is there, you know she got a donk!
wannabe hipster: oh... well i guess so.

New Age Hipster

An individual who tries to go against mainstream lifestyles, and favors the ideals of non-conformity, yet conforms to other hipsters around him-her. Typically, new age hipsters view themselves as artistic and often times sport "thrift store chique". if you would like to find a new age hipster, go to artistic neighborhoods in major cities, such as Williamsburg in Brooklyn. When looking for a fine specimen of new age hipster in Williamsburg, look not at the orthodox Jews, but the bohemia who are all wearing thick non-perscription glasses, and American Apparel wear that they say they bought at a thrift store. Hipsters used to be seen as cool, but are quickly losing reputation as new kids come into this scene who have an art history degrees and live off of their parents wealth.

Typical Person: Hey, where did you get those jeans.

New Age Hipster: A thrift store... <ugh>

Typical Person: Oh wait, no, you still have the tag hanging off, you got that from American Apparel. Ok.... What music is that you are listening to?

New Age Hipster: It is just a small band, you wouldn't know of, or appreciate them. <Haha>

Typical Person: Try me.

New Age Hipster: Matt and Kim

Typical Person: Arent they like celebrities now-a-days, they are awesome, but not a small band to say the least.

New Age Hipster: <Ugh> Whatever, Im going to go smoke with my friends, Im too cool for this anyways.
