A gambit, according to Oxford Dictionary, is either a trick used in chess to gain the upper hand or a trick used to actually gain the upper hand in the outset of a situation.

Scenario 1:
Person 1: "Your dad is gay!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!"
Person 2: "lmfao which one bruv"

Later:
Person 2 to a friend: "this was a gambit i used to counter-attack the urdadgay insult"

Scenario 2:
So apparently, I played the Danish Gambit to have both my bishops out, but whaddaya know, Black was a Protestant and attacked my light square bishop.
