A city that is so amazing yet so awful. The 20th largest city (after we got el paso'd), Memphis is a city where the popular phrase "Location, location, location" really comes into play. Staying away from the airport (unless you have a plane to catch) is probably a good idea, even in broad daylight. Also, any street with someone's full name in it (e.g., Elvis Presley Blvd, Danny Thomas Blvd, etc.) has a tendency to attract poverty, crime and poor sanitation. But if you're smart enough to stay close to the river or the suburbs you can find some pretty interesting things and some great food. Don't go to Graceland; it's expensive and boring. However, Memphis is home to a wonderful zoo, Mud Island, and many national and state parks and museums that its residents often take for granted. It's much better than Knoxville, where the Mountain Dew they drink isn't manufactured by Pepsi Co. Memphis' main problem is a racial divide that is caused by a majority of blacks hating whites because they assume all whites are inherently racist. Yes, I realize I just did the same thing. Get over it.

I have lived in memphis since I was born and not once have I been shot at, robbed, mugged, threatened, or raped. Our government is messed up but other then that Memphis is a good city to live in. Oh and 80% of the population doesn't even like Elvis and 90% hasn't even visited Graceland. So stop bashing us about him. We have history and who cares if 60% of the population is African American? Thats just stereotypical. If you want to see real crime, move to Somalia idiots.

Taking its influence from the old negro spirituals arising out of the cotton fields and the river, along with a new, distinctive driving drum beat, this new music became easily identifiable as it permeated the airwaves and topped the charts. STAX and HI Records were the local independent labels credited with this new creation.

It was accentuated by the horn sound prevalent in such soul classics as Hold On I'm Comin', Knock On Wood, Proud Mary, and others.

The Memphis Sound Drum and Bugle Corp, est. 2002, was crowned National Champion in 2007, but had moved to Texas and become defunct by 2010. The Memphis Sound band, created in 1996, lauds the best musicians, vocalists, and production in the region, performing ove 80 events annually. Memphis Sound Entertainment, est. circa 1993, is a full service Music and Entertainment Company located in Memphis, Tennessee. The company produces major concerts and private events throughout the United States.
