Originally, 'dude' referred to the hair at the base of a horse's tail. In the late 1800's, horse ranches became known as "dude ranches". And therefore, the men who worked on a "dude ranch" became known as "dudes".

Dude

informal way of referring to males. Almost the equivalent to bloke. It's usally used by surfers,skaters, and stoners ( pretty much any young white guy)but it can also be used as an exclamation word.

Dude #1: "That dude over there stole my bike!"
Dude #2: "Duuuude! that sucks dude..."
