Named for the New York Mets, who have for years had strong teams on paper that get dismantled by injuries, bad leadership, or any number of factors which seem unpredictable to anyone before March (and unpredictable to anyone in Queens before normally September). Commonly referenced in sports media and even among famous Mets fans, like Jerry Seinfeld and Kevin James. The Mets are so synonymous with self-flagellation that using "Metsed" as a reference is common across all sports fans, but especially those in the Bronx (who normally support the New York Yankees), and those from the other National League East markets (especially Atlanta, but to a lesser extent Washington, D.C. and Miami).
