In bad taste. This usage, as opposed to the physical description, originated in the rural South but has since been adopted for use nationwide and in urban settings.

Wearing a translucent blouse and a black bra is downright tacky.

auld lang syne sex

This refers to sex that occurs between two individuals who once had a relationship, whether married or girlfriend-boyfriend, but who are no longer affiliated. Auld lang syne sex occurs when one or both of the people involved enjoyed the sexual aspect of the relationship, even if they broke up or grew apart.

Jeremy and Jessica had their differences, and ultimately divorced. However, they still got together from time to time for some auld lang syne sex. They figured that they had really terrific sex with each other; and, since they had once been married, it was really okay.

go-cup

A term used in New Orleans to refer to the plastic cups given by bars to their patrons so that they might take drinks off of the premises, as in to-go drinks or at closing time.

"It's closing time, guys. Want your beer in a go-cup?"

hillbilly film noir

This is a small but important genre of film that fits all of the forms of the classic film noir, but is set in a bleak, impoverished Appalachian setting. This type of film features corruption, crime, moral ambiguity, a hero in conflict, and a mysterious woman. In many of them, moonshining or bootlegging or some other indigenous Southern form of unlawful activity is featured.

Robert Mitchum's "Thunder Road" and Gregory Peck's "I Walk the Line" are two very important examples of the hillbilly film noir.

Cincinnati chili

This culinary barbarity from Cincinnati, Ohio is really a hoked-up spaghetti sauce that consists of a faux weak chili flavored with spices such as chocolate, cinnamon, allspice, and possibly Worcestershire.

This goop is spooned on pasta (of all things!) and topped off with ingredients such as chopped onions, shredded Cheddar cheese, beans, and crushed oyster crackers. Cincinnatians who specify Five-Way Chili get the works: all of that.

A trip to Ohio would not be complete without sampling some Cincinnati chili, and enjoying the dribbling diarrhea that it both resembles and may result from it.

Perky effect

The Perky effect, in psychology, refers to the process by which visual mental imagery is thought to interefere with visual perception. For example, if a person is instructed to project by imagination a tomato or a banana on a while screen, an a faint image of a tomato or banana is projected, the person may not be able to tell the difference between the real image and that which was imagined. Cheves W. Perky did the pioneering research on this back in 1910. This is the first meaning of the Perky effect.

There is another meaning: the Perky effect is what happens when you go braless on a cold day.

Thomasina loved cold days because of the perky effect.
