ornamental hermit

Also known as a "garden hermit"; a person hired by wealthy landowners in the 18th century to live in solitude in a specially built hermitage, folly, or grotto on their estate, acting as a living decoration. They were expected to embody the qualities of a druid and live a secluded life, often with specific rules like growing their hair and beard long and not washing. In return for their service, they received lodging, food, and a stipend. Landowners and their guests might occasionally consult their garden hermits for advice, stories, or entertainment.
Landowners placed advertisements in local newspapers seeking ornamental hermits to live on their property for long spans of time (7 years, in one instance). One legend goes that someone's ornamental hermit was found drinking at a local pub 3 weeks into their tenure, thus breaching their contract.

mooring line

A line or cable used to secure marine vessels to berths during the docking process. An example of a particularly thick mooring line is a hawser.
I use multiple mooring lines to prevent my ship from drifting from port and causing collisions.

visible file

A general term for a filing system that uses overlapping cards fixed in shallow drawers or trays, where one line of information (e.g., patient name, date, etc.) is visible on the edge of each card for quick reference and indexing.
The term "Kardex" is a generic trademark that became synonymous with the visible file (filing system) itself, much like "Kleenex" is for facial tissues.

earthenware

Pottery fired at lower temperatures, making it softer and more porous than other ceramics (like stoneware and porcelain). While more prone to absorbing liquids and notably less durable than other ceramics, it can be a cost-efficient alternative when manufacturing kitchenware.
After everyday use, my earthenware has become chipped and scratch. In retrospect, I should have purchased the slightly-pricier porcelain dining set instead.

spoon of Diocles

An ancient Greco-Roman surgical instrument described by the Roman encyclopedist Celsus (1st century CE) and attributed to the Greek physician Diocles of Carystus (4th century BCE). Its intended purpose was to safely extract barbed arrowheads through the original entry wound without causing additional tearing of soft tissues. It was designed to be inserted alongside the arrow, rotated so the arrowhead fits into the hole, and then withdrawn with the arrow enclosed.

A 22 cm metal tool found in the Domus del Chirurgo (Rimini, Italy) is considered by archaeologists to be one of the only physical examples.
Some historians believe that the physician of king Philip II of Macedon used a spoon of Diocles to successfully remove an arrow from the king's eye without disfiguring him.

the slate

The taint region of an animal, esp. pet dogs. Due to a dog's lack of buttocks, the region between the anus and genitals tends to lack any discernible features and instead exists only as a relatively plain and flat surface.
I awoke in my bed beside my dog, whose rear end was particularly close to my face. I was initially alarmed but was relieved to find that I was in closer proximity to the slate than the actual hole.

Bostwick consistometer

A specific type of consistometer with a rectangular structure and a sluice gate; the opening of the gate causes the fluid within to flow; the distance and time it takes for the fluid to flow helps the user determine how runny or gloppy the substance is. In the United States, manufacturers of tomato ketchup are required to measure the consistency of their ketchup with a Bostwick consistometer.
Ketchup flowed through the Bostwick consistometer at a rate of 5.0 centimeters per 30 seconds, therefore it is of satisfactory consistency.
