One of the greatest rock/metal instrumentals ever made by one of the greatest metal bands ever created, Metallica. It clocks in at 8:53 and the demo was named "When Hell Freezes Over." The name change was made by late bassist Cliff Burton who was a huge H.P. Lovecraft fan. It is credited to Burton/Hetfield/Mustaine/Ulrich, and the first song in which the entire band played together. The Ride the Lightning recording has Hammett on lead guitar since Mustaine was booted from Metallica in 1983.

It features some of the greatest bass work from legendary late bassist Cliff Burton, most notably run through a Big Muff distortion box and a wah-wah pedal. It also features a great solo from legendary lead guitarist Kirk Hammett and an excessive but necessary use of cymbals by Lars Ulrich.

The S&M version won a Grammy for Best Rock Instrumental Performance in 2001.
"The Call of Ktulu is a very dark, haunting and great song."
