1. The expression "i love you" is the equivalent for both spanish "te amo" and "te quiero". "Te Quiero" can be said to everybody, BUT! "te amo" is used for a boyfriend or girlfriend.

2. You can say "te amo" to a friend, if both of you know that there's no sexual/physical attraction, in that case is the same as "te quiero".

1. boyfriend: te amo, Maria.
girlfriend: yo tambien te amo, mi amor.

2. Maria: let's go party so that you can forget that idiot!
Jessica: hahah, oh, you are so crazy!!te amo!!(or "te quiero")

Spanish for "I love you" If you are saying a whole sentences in Spanish and use it, it sounds very cheesy and soap opera like. Advice: Use "te quiero" instead...

te amo

Te amo is Spanish for I love you, however, Spanish has two phrases that translate to the English I love you. The two are not identical and cannot be used interchangeably. The difference is that te amo is said only to close loved ones, and means a deep or profound love (amo - the verb amar means love). Te quiero is used more casually, and actually translates as I want you (quiero - the verb querer means want). Having two phrases for I love you is not only useful, but kinda cool, as saying I want you is definitely sexier than saying I love you.

I don't speak spanish so I can't give an example sentence using te amo.

In spanish we have two tranlations for "I love you". "Te amo" y "Te quiero", both with different meanings.

The first one is "Te amo", that expresses a deep desire, it comes from the verb "amar", it implies a intense feeling, which based in its own insufficiency, needs and searches the meeting and union with other being. It's a feeling that involves attraction and looks for reciprocity in the desire; it complete us and give us energy and happiness for coexist, comunicate us and think up. It's an affection with full devotion and disposition, includes volition, concent and concern. It trends to a sexual union. Feel real "Amor" for some one means liking and endearment. It is a couple feeling BUT it can be a family feeling too even if it does not envolve the sexual desire because you could give your life for them.

The second translation is "Te quiero", comes from the verb "querer". It means, that you in a way, "want the best for someone", you like that person and you want to be with, because you enjoy your time together, it is fun and you don't want to end it. It applies for informal boyfriends or girlfriends, friends and second order relatives.

EXAMPLE 1:
Sophía: Do you know how much i love you? I want to spend all my life with you. Te amo.
Joel: "Yo también te amo". You are the love of my life.

Or...

Paulette: Damn! He doesn´t understand I could do everything for him. He is my brother, no matter what, "lo amo" and i will help him to fix his mistakes.

EXAMPLE 2:
Sarah: You know you can trust in me. We are besties, "Te quiero" you can tell me. :)
Mony: I trust in you and i love you too, but I need to think about first. I call you so we can hang out later.

Paco: Here, I brought you some candies, I know you love them. (In this expression the translation is "encantar").
Lilly: Owww! You should not have, "I love you", you always think of me as I do in you, I wrote you a letter ...
