rip the sleeves off

To "one up" somebody. To make somebody look less kool.

Derived from tearing the sleeves off a leather jacket, turning it into a leather vest.
James Dean: Joe, I've been dyin' since the day I was born.

Joe: Well Jimmy, I've been livin' since the day I was born, and I've been livin' like I'm dyin'.

Bystander: Whoa, Joe! Way to rip the sleeves off James Dean!
