kakocrite

Part of Speech: noun

Definition:
A person who pretends to be evil, cruel, immoral, or heartless, even though they are not truly so.
Often the opposite of a hypocrite, a kakocrite adopts a mask of villainy either to protect themselves, to manipulate perception, or to avoid emotional vulnerability.
Common in literature, fandoms, or real-life personalities who want to appear “edgy” or intimidating but are soft underneath.

Etymology:
From Greek kakos (bad, evil) + -crite (from hypocrite, meaning one who acts or pretends).
Coined to mirror “hypocrite” — while a hypocrite pretends to be good but is bad, a kakocrite pretends to be bad but isn’t.

Examples:
1.

A: “Did you hear what she said? That was so cold.”
B: “Yeah, but trust me—she’s a total kakocrite. She brought soup to everyone’s dorm when they were sick.”
2.

“Zuko from Avatar: The Last Airbender is a textbook kakocrite—scowling and brooding on the outside, but all heart underneath.”
3.

“He acts like a villain, but you should see how he treats stray cats. Absolute kakocrite.”
