the name given to someone from britain or ireland usually from major cities who engage in stealing cars and taking them for a spin before setting the cars alight. usually a joy rider can be best described as a male youth in his teens to early 20's unemployed dressed in tracksuits and illiterate. maybe from a broken home but are parasitical by nature. see also death driver

A worthless kid who steals cars, drives them around with scant regard for their own safety let along those around them. Often conveniently burns the cars afterwards.

The people carrying out these crimes often tend to be council.

Man 1: That joyrider's trapped in the car he set alight. Christ, he's screaming like a stuck pig.
Man 2: Come one, we'll miss the bus.

A person who free rides in a group activity or project and doesn't engage or contribute. Characterized by being aloof, insecure and apathetic.

Steve was frustrated by his school project group. Only he and Andy were contributing ideas - Larry kept staring at his phone and being a Jetpack Joy rider.

Joy ride 

To use a vehicle that is most likely not yours to pass time by driving it on a random route. Usually stealing the vehicle is part of the joyride. Most joyrides involve some form of law-breaking such as speeding, wreckless endangerment etc.

Detroit Joy Ride

The act of stealing a car and driving it around for a short period of time before taking it out to a secluded field and setting it on fire.
This practice doubles the adrenaline experienced by compounding the felonies committed.
It's hard to say whether it began in Detroit, but they most certainly perfected the art.

"Hey, can I bum a ride off you for a while?"
"Uh, sure; but didn't you just get a car?"
"I did, but someone took it out for a Detroit Joy Ride last night."

Driving aimlessly with friends at night causing trouble and looking for stuff to do. This may include stealing lawn items, wrecking cars, mailbox baseball, messing with pedestrians, doughnuts, e- brake slides , yelling racial slurs at foriegners, terrorizing basically everyone, ect...

people belonging to groups like these are so smooth and stealthy they are often reffered to as "urban ninjas"
