The story goes that every day, this dog (named Hachiko) would follow a Todai professor to the train, wait for him to return from his job, and then walk home with him. Well, one day the professor died in an accident, but Hachiko kept coming to the train station and waiting for him there. To honor Hachiko, the statue was built, and it is a popular meeting place for young people.
