Hand me ups - When your younger siblings outgrow you and start giving you their clothes, socks and shoes etc that doesn't fit them.

"You don't realise how much they have grown until they give you stuff that doesn't fit them anymore. I call them hand me ups"

Every family from the great depression to the current one knows the secret of the hand me down. Long used as a survival tool the method of handing down clothes with that "worn in look," has saved families money for years. The hand me up is typically a result of the younger generation of children either being better bred or better fed. Either way they are giving back to those who came before them.

The kid who listened to Baby Einstein in the womb and ate from his parents organic farm gave his older cousin a pair of hand me ups, his barely worn boots he had grown out of that would require some growing into by his older cousin.

The clothing suburban woman with adult children in college wear which their children have cast off or left at home. Items include hoodies with private school logos, ripped jeans or last season's Ugg boots.

Last year it was all Lululemon leggings. This year, it's all handmeups from her daughter Madison who's away at Tulane.
