Designated for assignment, a step that a Major League Baseball team takes in order to send a (soon-to-be former) major league player back to the minors under certain contractual conditions. "DFA" is often used as a verb.

First used in an ICQ chat thanks to a speed mistake, hitting f after d and failing to use the "ALT + s" key combination, program's quick send keyboard shortcut. Now widely used in other messenger and chat programs in Serbia and neighbour countries.
