dabble in the dark arts 

To have a family history including any non-white, usually black, relationships that are secretive or unspoken.

Child: "How come my hair is curlier than cousin Stacy's."
Parent: "We don't talk about it, but your great-grandfather was known to dabble in the dark arts."

Friend: "You kinda look white, but like a bunch of other things. What are you?"
Me: "Yeahhh. Our family tree is full of people who dabbled in the dark arts. Native American, black, South American, etc."
