Tyranny of Technique

The dominance of specialised methods and technical procedures over human judgment, values, or common sense. When technique becomes an end in itself, practitioners focus on following rules correctly rather than achieving good outcomes. The tyranny of technique is seen in medicine (treating test results not patients), education (teaching to standardised tests), and bureaucracy (following paperwork while ignoring human suffering). It elevates procedural correctness over substantive justice, turning professionals into technicians who can no longer see the purposes their techniques were meant to serve.
Example: “The hospital’s protocol said run the full battery of tests before prescribing pain relief. The patient suffered for hours—tyranny of technique, where following procedure mattered more than alleviating agony.”
