Soft Reference

The act of making an indirect reference to a person, piece of media, or place.

Instead of directly quoting or mentioning the reference, it is hinted at or alluded to.
Sometimes may require more context from the speaker since soft referencing can be vague or the listener may not understand the phrase/connection.

Soft referencing: "He said he didn't want the promotion anyway, but it’s just sour grapes."
Direct referencing: "He is pretending to dislike the job because he can't have it, which is the plot of Aesop's fable The Fox and the Grapes."

Soft reference: "Nature feels a bit too mechanical today."
Direct reference: "These insects remind me of that one Black Mirror episode, the one about the robot bees"
