Newbern, TN

A town in extreme Northwest Tennessee. Population: -400. Twenty churches, a couple schools, and the ancient train depot. No Wal-Mart, no stoplights. The whole town comes out for the basketball games. Nothing really happens.. and when it does, the whole town knows about it in the State Gazette.
Bob: You ever been to Newbern, TN, Tom?
Tom: Never heard of it, Bob.

The lamest small town in the history of small town-ness. It is a death trap to any who aspire to do anything great, though there have been rare cases of people moving away and living a somewhat normal life, though psychotherapy has reportedly been heavily involved.
I used to live in Newbern, but my doctor says my recovery is going well.

Fogey/fogy /fougi/ sl. (early 18C+, orig. Scot) old-fashioned, stuck-in-the mud.
Person with old fashioned ideas which he is unwilling to change: Come to the disco and stop being such an old fogey!
You think me an old fogeyand an old tory, his thoughtful voice said. I saw three generations since O’Connel’s time. I remember the famine. Do you know that the orange lodges agitated for repeal of the union twenty years before O’Connel did or before the prelates of your communion denounced him as a demagogue? You fenians forget some things. (James Joyce, Ulysses. Penguin Books,1992. p. 38)
