1 : a relational dynamic in which a person is regarded chiefly as a source of creative inspiration for another, rather than as an autonomous individual with independent needs and interiority.

2 : the psychological state of mistaking the intensity of being idealized or “seen” by another for genuine intimacy or love.

3 : a warning sign in early romantic or professional attention, in which being cast as someone’s inspiration precedes a demand that the person remain fixed in that role, often followed by resentment, control, or exploitation when they fail to.

Plain English : when someone likes you mostly because you inspire them, not because of who you really are. It feels like love, but it’s not really about you. It’s about what you give them. If you stop giving it, they lose interest or get upset.

muse trap (professional use) : when a boss, mentor, or colleague values you for the ideas or energy you bring to their work, but has no real interest in your advancement, credit, or wellbeing; only in what you keep producing for them.
“He fell in love with her freedom, not with her.”

“She spent two years in the muse trap before realizing the songs were never really about her.”

“If anyone recognizes you as their ‘Muse’… girl, run. It’s a muse trap, not a compliment. They want a stake.”

“My manager kept telling me I was ‘the creative spark’ the team needed, but every idea I pitched got credited to her in meetings. Classic muse trap; she wanted my output, not my growth.”

"I skeefed an apple off the neighbor's tree." "I skeefed some chips outta your bag when you looked away." "Don't skeef my chair when I go to the bathroom."
