Meetup became an organizing tool for a variety of interests including hobbies, drinking, sports, and gaming. Among the first users of Meetups were virtual communities such as BookCrossing, Slashdot, and LiveJournal. Currently, the average size of a gathering is 10, and the largest category of users are moms arranging field trips and playdates. Meetups provide a means of gathering like-minded people interested in a variety of social activities or interest.
