Hit the bed

What ESL (English as a second language) students say when they mix up the expressions "hit the hay" / "hit the sack" with "go to bed".

ESL student: I want to hit the bed now.

Native English speaker: Why? Are you unhappy or something? And why the bed?

To go to bed; sleep; rest. (see hit the hay)

I'm tired so I think I'll hit the bed.
