Gabrovšek

A slightly stubborn and grumpy person who lives in the city, however refuses to identify as a townsman, instead sticking to the old traditional values, listening to folk music and going to the village parties. He is surrounded by the neighbours who are members of his big family and who he watches curiously all the time, however hates being watched by them, gossips about them, copies them and wants to be better than them. He likes to have a drink of beer or wine every evening while watching TV, sometimes with the brothers, when he loudly criticizes all politicians left from the centre-right spectrum. He always complains about the uninvited guests but in reality always shows them hospitality. When family members come to a visit he always serves them homemade bacon, keeps filling their glasses with wine and keeps convincing them to stay for as late as possible. On that occasion they like to reaffirm their beliefs and make fun of others in a teasing way after which loud bursts of laughter follow.
Gabrovšek is such a legend. He just wouldn't let us leave his house. And the bacon was so good.

You think me an old fogeyand an old tory, his thoughtful voice said. I saw three generations since O’Connel’s time. I remember the famine. Do you know that the orange lodges agitated for repeal of the union twenty years before O’Connel did or before the prelates of your communion denounced him as a demagogue? You fenians forget some things. (James Joyce, Ulysses. Penguin Books,1992. p. 38)
