Shortened version of & nickname for "Edyth", or "Edythe" - a much older variant & spelling than "Edith" or "Edie".
Edyth is the oldest of the names & originated in Great Britain at least 1,500 years ago - likely longer, followed by "Edythe", some time in the Middle Ages; whereas 'Edith' emerged in the early-mid 1800s. It's an elegant, Ye Olde English name💃🏻💎😁

My girlfriend Edye loved our tour of London;
Edyth hated her name growing up, but by adulthood she'd grown to appreciate its rarity & history - still, she much preferred her nickname "Edye".
