An out-of-shape Hispanic volunteer neighborhood watchman who gets all uppity and pulls the trigger before a suspect can beat the living shit out of him. Upon this action, the watchman magically becomes a White racist murderer, and the suspect magically becomes an immaculate 13-year-old angel who can do no wrong. Even if you have no history of being racist, NBC will happily edit audio recordings to make you sound like a racist monster.

Boffin
British slang for a scientist or technical expert, esp . when the speaker is not certain of the expert’s specific field of study. Not necessarily derogatory, but typically used by persons without a technical background. In the US, the equivalent would be “egghead”, “squint”, or “geek.”
Origin of the word is unknown. Started sometime in World War 2. Given the typical evolution of British slang, could easily have started because what these experts did was confusing or “baffling” to the common person.
