When you start talking to someone in the street or on msn etc, and your saying things like "how are you" and "been up to much" to get the conversation going, like doing foreplay before sex.
Friend: yeah we did the whole conversation foreplay thing and then he was suddenly like oh gotta go bye.

Also when there is a big point to make, but you are nervous and can't get right into the big point without telling a meaningless story or two.
