They generally refer to ornamental cherry trees, not to confuse with cherry trees that produce fruit for eating. It is considered the national flower of Japan. The cherry blossom is the national flower of Japan. In 1912, they mayor of Tokyo, Yukio Ozaki gave the United States 3000 cherry trees to plant around the Tidal Basin in Washington, DC.

Some of the most celebrated cherry trees, the sakura (cherry blossom tree) and the shedarazakura (weeping cherry tree), have the most attractive blooms.
At a minimum, you can expect a beautiful sight for at least a few days before the peak bloom date and at least a few days after. Sometimes they can be out for a couple of weeks. How long they’re out depends on weather condition
The day the cherry blossoms reach peak bloom is not, of course, the only day you can see the flowers.
