Butterfly in the works

A phrase to use when referring to unknown variables which might upset an otherwise sound plan or theory. A reference to the butterfly effect.

'This should go without a hitch provided we don't get a butterfly in the works!'
5 minutes later:
'ARGH MY SPLEEN'
