Twelve dharanas (12^2) equals one dhyana (meditation), which is 2 minutes and 28 seconds of absolute single-pointed focus. Twelve dhyanas (or 12 X 12 X 12 seconds of absolute single-pointed focus) equals 1728 seconds, or 28 minutes and 48 seconds. This is the amount of time required to attain samathi. Again 1728 seconds, or 28 minutes and 48 seconds of pure and absolute single-pointed focus on an object of concentration opens the door way for samathi, the highest state of which is enlightenment.
