It was in 1785, the Bavarian goverment, fearing Papal retribution; banned the Illuminati from gathering and group membership dwindled until it died. Fictional secret society conjured up by conspiracy theorists to slander and create a warped vision of actual and legitimate organizations, social clubs, and institutions. Usually for no other reason then because they are misinformed as to the true purposes of said groups and rituals preformed by them.
In order to explain what outsiders don't know about certain groups or organizations, they exaggerate, misinterpret, or flat out create lies in order to fill in the blanks. The result creates an Illuminati conspiracy, where none so exists.
