The favourite kind of music of most Bulgarians. Its origins come from Turkey,Greece and the other countries on the Balkan peninsula. At first(during the 90's) chalga singers copied famous songs from their collegues from the countries mentioned above, but nowadays more and more Bulgarian singers prefer authors songs. One of the most famous chalga singers in Bulagria are:Mara-the Opener,Azis-the Homo,Gloria-the Skeleton,Gergana-the Silicone and many others(even more than you can see on MTV!).All of them, except for Azis are produced by Mitio-Payner-a
a part of Azis'chalga hit"Dui,Dui,Dui,listen to my hui,oops-song,please tell me(x2)...You should be jealous, you should swear,I want you to dream about me,Dui,Dui,Dui..."and so on:)

Chalga music or Pop-folk is a genre of popular Bulgarian music that originated in the early 90s after the fall of the Communist regime. Purportedly based on the rhythms of the Bulgarian folklore music (which was more evident in the first years), chalga music has risen to immense popularity in recent years.
Chalga music causes much controversy among the Bulgarian people. Condemned by rock, metal and pop music fans, who blame it for being of low quality and unsophisticated, despised by intellectuals for its plainness, promiscuous female singers with one-name pseudonyms and lack of thoughtful messages, chalga remains one of the most popular types of music in Bulgaria, if not the one most cherished. Moreover, it has influenced a lifestyle of never-ending parties in the most expensive and luxury night-clubs in the country, a standard for glamor appearance, a desire for luxury goods such as expensive cars, homes, and jewelry, and a new image of how a sexy man or woman should look.
Retro Chalga singers, or the pioneers in Chalga are famous for their most often profane and even vulgar song lyrics.

I consider some of the definitions I read were rather extreme. Of course, pop-folk is not a serious kind of music, it is dedicated to bring lively mood and to be listened to when you are druk. And please, don't tell me that you, out of Bulgaria don't drink! I don't consider that chalga lyrics are worse than hip-hop lyrics. I even consider chalga is better than rap, because, at least, pop-folk singers don't consider themselves to be very important. They are slef-ironic and never pretend to be "bad boys" or "people from the ghetoo" etc. ! And, after all, whatever you say, chalga is a powerful kind of music, because it simply captures everyone! I can't explain it to myself - may be it's because it's very lively, joyous and full of precious simlisity. It doesn't matter at all, because it really impresses everyone - the very fact is enough to proove chalga's influence!
And get ready, because when we enter European Union you will have to put up with chalga, and after that you will start to like it, and we will remind you what you have said about chalga!

European Man
At first a bit "rutsa-rutsa",
after that a bit "frutsa-fruts"
and in the end "op-op-op"
I'm ready for Europe!
And big Europe will be a car for a couple
and from Rim to Chelopek (famous BG city) everyone will be dancing "kiutchek"
And Europe will be shaking, we will change it's preferences and it will transmit every day Intervision for me! :D

Some people don`t make any difference between BULAGRIAN POP-FOLK and Chalga music. Pop folk is very popular music style in BULGARIA and it`s mixed by Pop music and some BULGARIAN folk motivs. Pop-folk singers are Anelia,Gergana,Emilia,Preslava and others. Chalga is music, which comes from Turkey and it has oriental sound. It`s not typical Bulgarian music but some Bulgarian singers sing this kind of music. Chalga singers are Azis,Kondio,Kati,Pepa,Ina and so on. So please make difference between pop-folk ( one of the most popular styles in Bulgaria) and Chalga(nowadays not so modern in the same country)
Pop-Folk
Anelia - You don`t know how i was waithing for you,how i was waiting for you
You don`t know how i was crying for you,how i was crying for you
Emilia - You`re staying next to me right now,and you`re entreating to forgive you again, but i can`t, let her forgive you, were you happier..
Chalga: Oo banana off banana..
Azis: Diee.. diee... diee... goodbye.. i can be without you
Kati: I have a boyfriend, boyfriend, boyfriend,I have a boyfriend, nice boyfriend
Kondio: Money money money money live is money
money money money money and nice chicks!

"Pure ambrosia for the soul. Lovely bulgarian music, unique in character, deeply rooted in traditional Bulgarian folklore. Highly recommended!"
I am gravely disappointed by the fact that Bai Mangau's eloquent sarcasm went unnoticed by Bulgaria's highly active internet voting herd of time-wasters that seem to have been so active here today, 4/8/2005. (I'd wager it's because of their poor English, mine being far from flawless).

A carnivorous hyena enters the Bulgarian parliament,
Driven and motivated, she is let down by insidious senators.

From the written oppinions before me there are 95% wrong. The guys given a definition of the word "chalga" mix up the words "chalga" and "pop-folk". The chaliga definition in the bulgarian dictionary is: "1.Music instrument. 2.Playing, piping, music.turkish.
