Mulatto

An offensive term used against those who are mixed black and white. "It was common to describe a person with both black and white ancestry as a mulatto during the period of slavery in the United States. Because of its dehumanizing roots and usage, this word has fallen out of favor." It is not a word for mixed people, it's more akin to a slur, and shouldn't be used.

P1: "Yeah my mom's black and my dad's white"
P2: "Oh so you're mulatto?"
P1: "What? No. Mulatto is an offensive term not a descriptor. It was used during slavery."
P2: "Oh I didn't know, I should educate myself"

Mulatto

1.) A term which may or may not be offensive to or accepted by a mixed race person, often the product of an interracial marriage.

2.) Mulatto can also be a degrading and offensive term used against the Ethnic Qarsherskiyan Tribe, considered a slur and used to delegitimize the unique history and cultural heritage of the Qarsherskiyan people.

Part of the Ethnic Qarsherskiyan Cultural Genocide was the erasure of identity. In the early 20th century, the state of Virginia passed the so-called "Racial Integrity Act" and forcibly sterilized Qarsherskiyan people, who were referred to as Mulattos at the time, and destroyed documents listing non-White people's race, listing everyone from Black to Indigenous to Qarsherskiyan people as "colored" and giving them second class citizen treatment. Mulatto can be a highly offensive word because of this history.
