Get the sitio Reddit mug.Cooking a reddit account is the act of making a fake account on reddit long before it's needed, by intermittently posting and commenting to lend credibility to the account when it's eventually put to use. Accounts can be created with the final purpose in mind already, or old or purchased accounts can be repurposed to become sock puppets.
Reasons someone might cook an account in advance include the ability to influence discussions, express controversial opinions without being immediately dismissed as a biased party (like paid or volunteer supporters who promote specific agendas, such as Israeli hasbara trolls that are paid or volunteer to astroturf support on social media to make it appear that their position is more popular than it really is), or share fabricated content that might be met with greater scrutiny if posted from a newly created account (such as individuals who cook accounts to share fake UFO videos they've made, disguising them as authentic recordings by ordinary people).
The difference between cooking an account and the expression "sockpuppet account" lies in the fact that cooking specifically involves the pre-planning of false engagement on an account over a period of time, whereas a sockpuppet account applies to any account being used for deceptive purposes.
The term "cooking" is derived from the act of preparing food over a period of time before it is ready.

"I posted that UFO video we made on the subreddit but everyone knew it was fake right away because the account was too new. So this time, I decided to try cooking reddit accounts, and spent the two months adding random comments and posts every few days. Hopefully when I post this new video they will be a lot less skeptical!"

A declaration made regularly by Chad Roberts Of Cold Ones, as a form of retaliation and or the promise thereof, usually out of anger or frustration or in a situation when Chad feels that he has been wronged. It is important to note that the majority of the situations in which Chad says this are situations that he agreed to and he just forgot or wasn't paying attention when the rules were being explained both of which are usually attributed to the fact that chad is heavily intoxicated at the time of filming.
It is also important to note that Chad is most likely saying this as a joke and he doesn't genuinely expect the reddit to actually give a shit however, it is a lot funnier to suspend your disbelief and pretend that chad wholeheartedly believes that the reddit will launch a witch-hunt against the offending party

Max: * Breaks some nerdy shit that chad thinks is cool*
Chad: “why would you do that?!”
Max:* just sits and laughs at the camera *
Chad: “the reddit will hear about this!”

Get the Banned from Reddit mug.The specific psychological damage incurred from prolonged exposure to Reddit's potent cocktail of hyper-specialized echo chambers, brutal downvote mobs, pseudo-intellectual pedantry, and fleeting, dopamine-driven validation (karma). It warps your communication style into a defensive, citation-ready, and overly qualifying mode. The trauma manifests as an inability to have a normal opinion without imagining the "Well, actually..." reply, a fear of expressing joy for niche interests, and a deep-seated suspicion that any community you love will eventually be ruined by drama, corporate greed, or a power-mod.
*Example: "He can't even recommend a movie without framing it as 'Unpopular opinion, but...' and citing three sources. Classic trauma from Reddit. He also flinches when he hears the phrase 'Touch grass,' which was the last reply he got before deleting his 8-year-old account."*
