A person who fills the sterotypes generally surrounding one knowledgeable about computers (considers video games a way of life, watches sci-fi etc.) but does not necessarily have that knowledge. A nerd is always a social reject. The term nerd differs from geek in that a geek has knowledge regarding computing or other cutting edge technology, but is not necessarily a social reject. A geek may prefer to communicate over the internet (not making them a social reject - infact they often have more contact with their friends than other groups), while a nerd has difficulty in forming any friends or communicating in a social way atall. Geeks are often (unfairly) confused with nerds.
If you feel nerds are in some way better than geeks just think: how many people have you heard admitting to being a geek? now compare this to the number of people declaring themselves nerds.
Oh - I agree that yes, Mr. Gates is a nerd. Have any or you promoting nerds ever heard of an operating system called 'Linux'? I think you'll find its generally more reliable, secure and controllable than windows - particularly the more recent versions (2K and XP). It does however require a higher degree of intellect to operate successfully than windows, which I feel furthers my point.
There is such a thing as an aspiring geek, who, though lacking the intellectual prowess of geeks in general, realise that there is more to computers than writing word documents and playing games. Often these aspiring geeks will develop into a full geek.

'I'm a geek' - said with pride
'He's a nerd' - used in an insulting manner
'I'm a nerd' - when have you ever heard this used?!

A demeaning term given to not only one who is very intelligent or nonathletic, but anyone who says or does something that is considered idiotic, confusing to the point of stupidity, or generally worthy of disapproval. Also, if somebody fails at doing something, especially if he has previously gloated about doing such action, he must be called a NERD. (Note: This term differs from the normal word, "nerd" because it is in all caps. It is to be kept that way.)
Guy #1: Alright now is the last chance, what do you all want to eat?
Guy #2 and #3: WAFFLE HOUSE!
Guy #1: Waffle House it is.
(5 minutes later)
Guy #4: He can we get Chinese food?
Guy #1: Oh my God, I hate you so much.
Guy #2: NERD!

An individual who has tendencies to become obsessive about their interest and Hobbies. Nerd will usually become obsessed with certain genres, TV shows, films, books, video games, or technology and will involve them/it in as much of their lives as they can, even using obscure references to their interests in conversation.
They will re-watch episodes and movies and re-read books multiple times and follow the series closely. They will buy all the related merchandise, often collecting and keeping it in mint-condition. They will attend conventions, commonly while dress as their favourite characters.
There is a social stigma towards nerds, particularly in schools. Since nerds tend to obsess over particular things, usually things that are unpopular, they will often go unaware of current popular trends and are view by others to be uncool for their alternative interests.
Nerds are commonly viewed as very intelligent due to their hunger for information.

All nerds share one common attribute; they think they are more intelligent than normal people. However, there are many types of nerd, here are a few:
* Computer nerd: Usually very fat and very pail. Computer nerds are incapable of carrying out any physical activity more strenuous than typing on a keyboard, they often exhibit terrible body odour and show little care for their appearance.
* Goth nerd: Obviously the goth nerd wears black clothes, they are usually into stupid interpretations of Wicca and/or role-playing games. Curiously for nerds they often don’t smell too bad.
* Metal nerd: Metal nerds once again wear black clothes, they also have long hair and have the most rancid body odour of all nerds. Obviously they listen to heavy metal music.
* Retired nerd: These are over the age of 70 and are usually into collecting some meaningless thing; like stamps or bottle caps, or anything else that is incredibly boring.
