I'd rather be hated by everybody/unpopular for who I am than popular/well liked/loved for who I'm not or what I want people to see me as (an image) if those were my choices, even if some or most others would choose something different.

Popular isn't everything, just like winning isn't everything.

I'd rather be unpopular/hated by all for who I am (even if it meant they didn't respect me) than popular/well liked/loved by all for something I'm not (an image of a well liked/popular person) or something I think they would like/love rather than who I really am, because then I would be living my life like a poseur and a coward.
