When you, as a psychology major, try to use what you have learned in class to "diagnose" someone of a psychological condition without full knowledge or proper certification.

Psych student: "my friend might have an anxiety disorder, i learned about it today in class."
Professor: "he's just nervous, don't fall victim to the Psychology Student Syndrome."

This technique relies on the psychological phenomenon of reactance, in which a person has a negative emotional response in reaction to being persuaded, and thus chooses the option which is being advocated against.

When someone leads you or makes you believe that something is true under false pretenses and you are blind sighted by the actual reality of the situation and you have believed it for a long time until what you thought was real is taking from underneath you and you are left with damage and so much hurt in your memory of what you perceived the whole time to be real was nothing more than a sick game

Silencing Psychology

The tendency for the field of psychology to remain silent about the internal practices that silence diverse viewpoints, and frames of reference through which phenomena may be understood. Many of these tendencies come from practices that claim to be "Critical," and without contest.

The professor was practicing silencing psychology as he professed hard and fast viewpoints that increased discomfort among his students, leading to their total shut down in the class discussion.

status psychology

When a person is too cheap to actually pay a psychologist for help and would rather put all their issues in their facebook status and hope that their cry for attention will solicit the advice of their friends who are no better equipped to help them than a three day old bowl of pudding.

This is a status on Facebook:

Mary Smith is ALL men suck. Why can't one man keep his word. Oh well, I guess I will be single forever.

Enough with the status psychology session, Mary. Stop whining on facebook and deal with it you whiny bitch!
