gulfton

Gulfton is a section of western Houston, Texas.

Gulfton, a 3.2 square mile group of apartment complexes, is located outside of the 610 Loop and inside Beltway 8, west of the city of Bellaire, east and south of the southwest freeway, and north of Bellaire Boulevard.

Gulfton has a mostly Hispanic and immigrant population.

The apartments that make up Gulfton were built during the Oil Boom of the 1970s, when the population was wealthy and predominantly white. After the oil bust in the mid 1980s, much of the wealthy population then left the area, and was replaced by Latin American immigrants. Crime increased in the area, so the neighborhood became known as the Gulfton Ghetto.

Study Guilt

Commonly occurs when one has been slacking off/not studying hard enough in college, resulting in a poor grade on an exam. This may be due to frequent and out-of-control substance abuse, and/or generally laziness. One then feels the need to study very hard to make up for this lack of effort, even if exams have passed. (Occurs for 1-2 days, at most)

Jim: So did you get your astronomy exam back?

Matt: Yeah, last night. I got a B but Kevin got a D+; ever since then he has been studying really hard.

Jim: Study guilt: don't worry, it will blow over by tomorrow.

Thesis Guilt

Typically when writing a thesis for a PhD, the author will feel guilt all of the time. When doing any other activity other than thesis writing, such as watching TV for relaxation, the guilt will always be there. The only known cure is finishing the thesis.

Jane is unhappy out for dinner with her friends because she has thesis guilt.

Guilty Pleasure

Something that someone likes, even if they're aware of its faults. In some cases, they may even have difficulty finding something positive to say about it.

Person A: Why exactly do you like some of the things you like? The appeal in some of them is lost on me.
Person B: Well, I... Huh. That's a really good question. I guess they're what I'd call guilty pleasures.
Person A: Fair enough.

Survivors Guilt

When you feel guilty for outliving a spouse/friend/family member.

Especially if they died doing something you have done a thousand times before, e.g. driving, falling over.
