In rural Canada, townie simply means an
individual who grew up in a town, as opposed to someone who grew up in a thoroughly rural area. Townie has connotations of bourgeois. It indicates a cultural division. The townie would have all of the pretenses and trappings of those from large cities. He/she would be fully intent on attending University. Their
music and fashion tastes would be cosmopolitan. Unlike their rural counterparts, they would NOT
live to hunt deer and moose, go mudding, and make a sporadic living off of
cutting firewood and informal mechanical repairs. There is a bit of disdain from rural folk for the townie, notably for the townie'
s lack of self-sufficiency. However, the townie often has respect for the rural lifestyle and is likely, at times, to affect it.
