Lol

A word that originally meant:
1) Lots of Love
2) Laugh out Loud

However, it now is more of the equivalent of the grunt you make when you're not really laughing, but you acknowledge the joke. It is also used to soften an insult or make something sound less serious. Alot of the time it is used as an akward silence filler.

When someone is really laughing out loud, the tend to add exclamation points or excessive Ls and Os, or capitalizing it.
ROFL, LMAO, ROFLALMAO, LMFAO, and HAHAHAHAHAHA are also used.

To make something seem less insulting:
Person 1: I think you should go on a diet, lol.
Person 2: lol

To make something sound friendlier:

Person 1: Wanna go out?
Person 2: No, lol

To fill an akward silence:
Person 1: Hey!
Person 2: Hey!
--10 minutes later--
Person 1:lol

To acknowledge humor:
Person 1: Why did the chicken cross the road?
Person 2: IDK
Person 1: 2 get 2 the other side!!

Person 2:lol

WHEN YOU ARE ACTUALLY LOLLING
Person 1: Remember last night when Sara told Ms.Hemmingway she loved her? HAHAHAHA... and Ms.H called the police?????
Person 2: LOLOLOLOLOLOL!!!!!

Originally Meaning "Laughing Out Loud".
Since it has now just become a way to show something is funny with laughing out loud being optional, it means "Laughing On Line"

Person 1 says:
