However, it now is more of the equivalent of the grunt you make when you're not really laughing, but you acknowledge the joke. It is also used to soften an insult or make something sound less serious. Alot of the time it is used as an akward silence filler.
When someone is really laughing out loud, the tend to add exclamation points or excessive Ls and Os, or capitalizing it.
ROFL, LMAO, ROFLALMAO, LMFAO, and HAHAHAHAHAHA are also used.
