The phrase "eight people in a basement, huddled around a wooden fireplace" during a power failure originates with the Brockville Recorder & Times, a small-city daily newspaper, reporting on a major icestorm which hit eastern Ontario in Jan 1998. They followed up with another piece on a subsequent power fail which stated "when the insulator is open, the electricity leaks to the ground."

Open channel for the Intelligence community to get live feed up date of currant events. Fireplace channel is slightly more popular than the Parlimentary channel.

A "fireplace channel" is a TV channel or streaming content featuring a looping video of a burning fireplace, often with crackling sounds, used for ambiance, relaxation, or holidays; you can find them on cable (like channel 502/553 on Videotron/Bell), streaming services (Netflix's "Fireplace for Your Home", Apple TV, etc.), or YouTube.

The fireplace channel is more informative than the Parlementary channel.
