Vanligtvis så används "äpplen" när någon person har stor pung, termen kan ändå användas fast man kan även ändra från "äpplen" till "vindruvor" eller "russin". Ordet används oftast med "hans" (Han) mellan "plocka" och "äpplen". En svordom fungerar också emellan.

Används ibland som skällsord mot bögar, små människor eller smarta människor.
